Abstract:This chapter starts with an explanation of what crime linkage is, what it involves, and where the current body of research stands. Following this, the Daubert criteria are explained and an evaluation conducted by Woodhams, Bull, and Hollin is outlined. The progress made in the last decade in researching crime linkage is then considered, and the suitability of its use in legal proceedings is reassessed, again using the Daubert criteria. A recent ruling by the Scottish courts is also presented which deemed crime linkage evidence to be inadmissible in that case, which gives practical insight into the current scientific standing of crime linkage. Finally, the chapter considers what the pressing research priorities are and the manner in which these could be best met.
