Abstract:

The web series offers creative practitioners a level of freedom from the constraints of more traditional serial formats. In this chapter, I explore the creative pilgrimage of script development I, and co-writer/director Natalie Roe, undertook with Tales of Bacon, a medieval comedy web series based in Northern England in 1380. Script development for an independent web series blurs pre-production and production, the process evolving to match the needs of a micro-budget and a protracted production timeframe. Throughout this chapter, I draw comparisons between aspects of medieval pilgrimage and stages of the script development for our web series: it can be viewed as a journey towards a goal (the filmed series) in which the pilgrims (the filmmakers) are led by guidebooks and mentors (screenwriting texts, writers’ groups such as Raindance Digital Creators network), changed and shaped by traveling companions (crew, cast, location liaisons), diversions and sparks of inspiration.
