Abstract:

This chapter explores the entrepreneurial view of strategy for the sport and leisure (SL) sectors. It introduces three frameworks that help to explain the creation of new leisure-based products, services, processes, and business models. The chapter considers the core competencies of SL organisations and the possibilities for extending them. Following this, discussions investigate different approaches and strategies, and opportunities for paradigm shifts within SL. Two case studies evaluate (i) technological innovations of both Hawk-Eye and VAR (Video Assisted Referee), and (ii) an extended case study of a variety of strategic changes within Association Football. The key question explored in this chapter is whether existing capabilities can deliver appropriate types of innovation for SL organisations.
