Abstract:This chapter offers some observations, based on the author’s personal experience, on Bob Young’s work as editor, publisher and author in leading a project which sought to expand the influence of psychoanalysis beyond its base in small clinically-focussed networks. It describes his leadership of the Free Associations project, a major contribution to efforts to bring psychoanalytically-based knowledge to bear on the study of society, culture and politics. Alongside that project’s creation of important scholarly and cultural spaces stands the intellectual legacy of the sophisticated and impassioned humanism which ran through Bob’s work.
