Abstract:

Social media may provide a valuable way of combatting some of the social challenges of dementia, by providing opportunities for self-expression and social connection. In this chapter, we provide a narrative review of the evidence on the use of social media by people with dementia and a reflexive account of the second author’s experience. This chapter provides an important foundation for developing understandings of living with dementia in the digital age and the role that social media can play in supporting those with the diagnosis. We also outline the challenges that people with dementia may encounter when using social media, such as issues concerning online stigma and digital literacy and inclusion.
