Abstract:The bum of Pippa Middleton has become a contemporary cultural icon, a site of desire, envy and speculation. This essay uses Barthes’ tools of semiotic analysis in order to make sense of this icon, to explore the ways in which Pippa’s bum has become so much more than just a pair of buttocks and, in doing so, reveal the tensions evident in maintaining bodily delineation and integrity. The fascination with Pippa’s bum reveals that bodies are always subject to mythologisation and suggests that it is worth looking closely at their signifying potency.
