Abstract:

This first chapter indicates the aim of the book and its potential target market, before outlining the nature of mixed methods research. It discusses quantitative and qualitative research and refers to the research philosophy of each. It then introduces the nature of mixed methods research, distinguishing between the different types of sequential and concurrent approaches, and indicates both the advantages and disadvantages of mixed methods. This is followed by an overview of the use of mixed methods research in tourism, indicating its growing use over the past two decades or so, as well as the tourism topics and themes that have been investigated using mixed methods. Next, there is a brief introductory section on how to conduct mixed methods research. The final section of the chapter provides an outline of the chapters that follow this first chapter.
