Abstract:

In the emerging sports economics/management literature, the term attendance usually refers to stadium attendance or, perhaps more colloquially, stadium visitors. Although there also exists a large body of survey-based research on spectator motives, their preferences, and, last but not least, their willingness to pay to attend a match, stadium attendance demand research is primarily concerned with modeling the number of distributed tickets. The resulting empirical literature can be broadly divided into two literature streams: studies exploring either matchday or seasonal data. Although empirically modeling stadium attendances has already a long history, going back to 1965, many sports and sports markets have not been explored yet. Further, potential methodological problems persist.
