Abstract:This chapter aids the surgeon in the selection of instruments, suture, and needles when performing an ovariohysterectomy (spay) or orchidectomy (neuter) procedure. The surgical instruments used in spay-neuter can be divided into those used for cutting, manipulation of tissue, manipulation of needle and suture, adequate hemostasis, and drape securement. The Mayo-Hegar needle holder and the Olsen-Hegar needle holder are two instruments that are commonly used to manipulate suture or to hold needles. Commonly used sutures in veterinary medicine for spay-neuter procedures include synthetic monofilament absorbable sutures such as poliglecaprone 25 and polydioxanone, synthetic braided absorbable sutures such as polyglactin 910, and stainless steel. Suture needles are required in surgery to facilitate the passage of suture through tissues. The feline/pediatric canine neuter pack is designed for use on male cats of any age who are not cryptorchid, and for male puppies on whom an instrument tie castration technique will be used.
