Abstract:

The rapid advancement of digital technology is reshaping various industries, including tourism. While sustainable tourism has focused on mitigating the negative impacts of travel, the emerging concept of regenerative tourism seeks to move beyond "net-zero" practices to create "net-positive" outcomes for both local ecosystems and communities. This chapter explores the role of digital technology in supporting regenerative tourism, proposing that technology must evolve beyond current sustainability models to facilitate a holistic and interconnected approach. Key characteristics of regenerative tourism include shifting from net-zero to net-positive, embracing system thinking, fostering place-based practices, and promoting transformative experiences. Digital solutions for regenerative tourism should emphasize inner growth for tourism leaders, local ecosystem mapping, and community-based experience creation. Leveraging appropriate smart tourism technologies that align with local contexts, along with integrating artificial intelligence, can help measure and optimize regenerative practices. The chapter suggests that a multi-sided platform approach can empower stakeholders, facilitating the transition from net-zero to net-positive tourism while enabling deeper engagement with social and natural ecosystems. By aligning smart technology with regenerative principles, tourism leaders can foster sustainable, transformative, and community-driven tourism practices that contribute positively to the environment and society.
