Abstract:

This case study examines a National Health Service (NHS) Trust in England, offering a cautionary example for other Trusts across the UK. Between 2019 and 2021, 11 current or former employees were suspected to have died by suicide, prompting the Trust to commission research into the impact of these losses on the workforce. Through semi-structured interviews and informal conversations with 39 staff members affected by the suicides of colleagues, the study revealed mixed perceptions of the support provided by the Trust and highlighted several critical areas requiring immediate improvement. This chapter provides a brief overview of key literature on suicide prevention to contextualise the issue and explores the current state of suicide prevention and postvention within the NHS in the UK.
