Abstract:

Chapter 6 explores how labour onset is experienced by women, and the symptoms and factors that bring them into hospital. The authors discuss why identifying the onset of labour can be challenging for both women and health professionals, and the factors that can affect their perceptions and choices. The complex mix of social, cultural, and environmental factors that influence a woman's decision to come into hospital are explored. This includes how fear and anxiety in relation to pain can contribute to heightened pain in labour. The chapter includes discussion of the impact of societal views and the narrative around birth, particularly in the media, and the role that midwives can play in shaping that narrative.
