Abstract:

Whether on the frontline in Ukraine or on a hospital ward during the Covid-19 pandemic, journalists are confronted daily with distressing news and images. In this emotion-laden news environment, there is growing awareness that journalists, however resilient they may be, are not immune from the impact of the difficult stories they cover. But how do they manage their own emotions and the trauma of others that can so easily spill over and affect themselves? This chapter examines and reflects on the wide array of coping strategies employed by journalists, both consciously and unconsciously. These range from maladaptive avoidance strategies and affective behaviours of immersion in a story to commitment to public service journalism and fostering emotional intelligence. The chapter constructs a theoretical framework drawing primarily on a psycho-social and affective methodology to help better understand and analyse the complex relationship between journalism and emotion.
