Abstract:With the increased range and availability of spatial audio tools in the last decade, one can now make spatial music at a relatively low cost, and in some cases for free. Accordingly, it seems timely to explore the potential of spatial compositional thinking for composers. While much literature addresses immersive audio from the technical and mixing perspectives, the compositional aspects of spatial sound appear to be relatively under-explored, especially when considering electronic and popular music. That said, a body of spatial concepts has become established across electroacoustic music and sonic arts practices in recent decades. Although the sound materials and aesthetics might initially seem distinct from electronic and popular music, they share a core characteristic: mediation via loudspeakers, affording immense flexibility to manipulate the spatial images and dimensions in subtle and extreme ways. With this commonality in mind, this chapter explores how perspectives from electroacoustic music and sonic arts might be fruitfully reframed and applied, taking a fresh look to provide valuable insights into compositional spatiality more broadly. Inspired by the author’s experiences of composing and teaching undergraduate degree-level composition modules, this examination aims to empower composers across genres to fully engage with the creative potentials of spatial composition.
