Abstract:

This chapter will explore the complexities of delegation in the multidisciplinary teams (MDT) in the unique context of prison healthcare MDTs, including mental health nurses (MHNs), occupational therapists (OTs), general practitioners (GPs), psychology, and psychiatry staff, working closely together. The chapter will address how to navigate the challenges of prioritising and delegating care in this setting, using realistic case studies and interactive activities to illustrate the practical application of delegation principles in the prison context. Importantly, the chapter focuses on improving communication, mutual understanding, and fostering a more cohesive working relationship, where the skills and expertise of all team members – healthcare providers, prison officers, and other external services – complement each other for the benefit of patient care. The chapter will demonstrate the significance of effective collaboration in enhancing both the quality of care and team dynamics in the prison healthcare setting.
