Abstract:

This chapter will begin by explaining the importance of understanding how people learn, drawing on academics’ experiences explored through a small qualitative study. It will then briefly explore how learning happens. Following this, the chapter will introduce a series of theories of learning and pedagogical approaches that can be implemented in Higher Education, considering staff and students’ needs. It will critically consider traditional Western-centric theories, such as social learning and experiential learning, and introduce theories that are more inclusive and champion social justice. The chapter will then explore socio-cultural theories of learning and critical pedagogy as fitting practice, evidenced pedagogical approaches that support students holistically, considering their uniqueness as a key enabler of learning.
