Abstract:This chapter explores the intersection of poverty and cancer through Carrie-Anne's lived experience as a lone parent and survivor. It highlights how financial hardship amplifies the emotional, physical and practical challenges of a cancer diagnosis, from navigating benefits and food banks to coping with psychological distress and parenting under strain. The narrative underscores systemic barriers, the stigma of poverty and the urgent need for relational, person-centred approaches in policy and practice. It concludes by advocating for structural change, including financial support at diagnosis and initiatives like Poverty Truth Commissions, to foster empathy, equity and meaningful collaboration for social justice.
