Abstract:

Motorsport hallmark events have actively attracted sports tourism for 107 years. This paper examines some of the motivations and outcomes of the relationship between motorsport and tourism and identifies that local and national government has recognised the mutual synergy since motorsport began. The paper then examines how tourism is leveraged through motorsport with some practical examples from both circuit racing and world championship rallying. It is identified that at the top level of motorsport tourism is now seen as the core reason for many races to take place. Finally the paper argues that tourism organisations shouldn’t just look to encouraging attracting overseas tourists, valuable though they are, but should look closer to home at tourism within the host country and host community too.
