Abstract:

This workshop focuses the many challenges to the working relationship between science and their institutions on the one hand and journalism and news organisations in the context of a developing country and some potential remedies to enhance that relationship for the sake of development. Co-orgnanised with the Society of Indonesia Science Journalists (SISJ), the workshop features a short keynote speech by Associate Professor An Nguyen from Bournemouth University and a discussant panel of local scientists and science journalists chaired by Mr Harry Surjadi, President of SISJ. Workshop participants are expected to cover a range of stakeholders, including science, health and environment journalists from Jakarta-based news outlets, scientists and other representatives of science institutions (including science-related government agencies and NGOs), local journalism and communication academics. The ultimate aim is to promote mutual understanding and collaboration as well as to remove unnecessary tensions in the seemingly acrimonious and professionally irreconcilable relationship between the two worlds of science and journalism.
