Abstract:

Media and Communication Education, together with other aspects of Higher Education, is increasingly important in view of the increasing uptake of communication technologies and devices among the general population and especially among 18-24-year olds, the core demographic of higher education students. McDougall and Potter have discussed the concept of ‘third spaces’ and how the informal spaces that students interact with outside of the classroom should be considered when designing curricula in education at any level. This article reflects the experience of the author at a UK higher education institution, within the context McDougall and Potter’s work, as well as the current UK communications sector dynamics and, briefly, the Turkish context. This is an adapted version of the keynote speech delivered at the International Symposium on Communication in the Digital Age, hosted by Mersin University on 18 October 2018.
