Conference: From COVID-19 to armed conflicts: radio faced with a multiplicity of crisesrises by IDETCOM & Groupe de Recherche et d'Etudes de la Radio (GRER)
Dates: 14-15 November 2024
Abstract:Paper Abstract: Following the 2004 USA presidential election results, this paper explores the tension between podcasting as a feminist space for quiet activism (based on my co-authored paper on this subject with Dr Helen Williams) and the podcasts that may be seen to belong to the broader online space of the manosphere.
Panel title: Global Storytelling: Radio, Podcasting and the Coverage of Gender-based Violence. Presented with Emma Heywood and Katy McDonald. Panel Abstract: This panel proposed by MeCCSA Radio Studies Network (UK), discusses the story-telling approaches when covering gender-based violence in multiple contexts. Working within Theme 2 of the conference, we foreground the magnitude of gender-based violence as a social crisis. The vital role that radio coverage and podcasting can play in creating space for discussion and awareness will be central to this panel. We will also be looking at the risks of negative or stereotypical representations, which may impact equality and safety. Our panellists will be sharing examples from both radio and podcasting, long and short form, live and pre-recorded. The debate will centre around the various narrative approaches which have been adopted in case studies such as radio broadcasts in conflict zones, breaking news coverage of gender-based violence, as well as podcasting as a space for quiet activism. Following paper presentations, the panel will encourage conversation with conference delegates around these themes in the context of radio and podcast practice and study. We welcome the opportunity of this panel to forge relationships between RSN and GRER, with the aim of reigniting historical ties between the two organisations.
