Abstract:

This paper is a key note speech to address the southwest Step Up to Social Work Consortium.

This presentation explores the lived experiences of Newly Qualified Social Workers (NQSWs) and their managers, focusing on themes of identity, supervision, emotional resilience, and professional belonging. Rooted in strength-based research and Appreciative Inquiry, the study investigates how Social Graces (SG) shape relationships, influence practice, and impact professional development. Through qualitative storytelling methodologies, the voices of practitioners reveal key insights into supervision dynamics, the significance of emotional safety, and the role of privilege and oppression in workplace experiences.

Findings highlight the emotional complexity of Social Work, from vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue to the power of laughter and the right to cry. Participants emphasized the importance of authentic relationships, self-awareness, and team support in sustaining practice. The study also uncovers how gendered expectations, neurodiversity, and societal perceptions of appearance affect confidence and professional identity.

Ultimately, this research underscores the necessity of reflective supervision, meaningful feedback, and work-life balance to retain and empower Social Workers. By centering the voices of practitioners, the study challenges dominant narratives and calls for a more supportive, resilient, and inclusive profession.
