Abstract:

Tilia Lenz (She/Her), Senior Lecturer, Bournemouth University (BU) is a qualified Social Worker with extensive experience of Children's Social Care as a practitioner and manager. Since 2019 she has been interested in the impact of stress and vicarious trauma on performance in practice on an individual and organisational level. For the past 4 years she has dedicated her doctoral research to this broad topic.

The conference talk will focus on the 'Reclaiming Resilience' project that emerged from a Continues Professional Development unit that Tilia teaches at BU. The study focussed on the lived experience of female leaders in Health and Social Care settings. The aim of the study was to gain an understanding of the impact of stress and resilience on personal and professional performance. It showed that this was a gendered issue, impacting on female leaders with multiple roles and care responsibilities and offered an opportunity to evaluate leadership in the context of social and cultural expectations. Findings showed how stress and trauma influence decision making in value-based professions that require individuals to be compassionate and caring in practice and leadership roles.
