Abstract:This presentation reflects on two research projects in which creative methods were used to engage voices often marginalised in research, policy and public debate. The first project explores children’s understandings of public service media through workshops with children aged 8–11, who developed and pitched their own ideas for television programmes, games, and other media they would like to see made for children like themselves.
The second project reflects on photo walks, participant-led image-making and creative practice. This work emphasises embodiment, movement, dialogue and place, while acknowledging the messiness and uncertainty that often characterise creative research.
Taken together, the projects consider how creative methods can open up alternative forms of expression and meaning-making, whilst also asking how research might be more reciprocal and meaningful for participants themselves.
