Abstract:

They are the new voters, absentees, consumers, protesters, and decision-makers. Generally speaking, “they’ve had it better” than previous generations. And they allegedly have the attention span of a goldfish. Can we trust them with our planet’s future? Generation Y; the internet is an embedded part of their everyday life - we want to make democracy an embedded part of their everyday life. What is the role of the internet in broadening the understanding and the practice of citizenship? This presentation attempts to offer some answers to these questions based on a multi-stage research project carried out in 2004/05 in England.
