Studies in Stillness: Motion Capture Portraits. The Photographers' Gallery, London.

Authors: Sloan, S.

Dates: 11 July-14 August 2012

Abstract:

Using motion capture data as the core material, the work explores the portrait through the medium of animation, focusing on the simple gestures and movements of her subjects.

Framed as a single shot and composed around the head and torso of the sitter, the work refers to the traditions and conventions of portraiture, but raises questions concerning the convergence of painting, animation and photography.

For this exhibition, three portraits were displayed on the large scale SCALA screen system at the Photographers Gallery. These were shown alongside the original motion capture data and the wireframe polygonal models. The virtual, sculpted forms were separated and exhibited alongside the mechanism of their motion
