Local Democracy in Times of Crisis: Exploring the Politics of BCP Council

Authors: Baker, T. and Gwinn, I.

Abstract:

This British Academy funded docu-film, recounts the establishment of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council as part of local-government-reorganisation (LGR) in 2019. The film investigates specifically how the newly formed BCP authority witnessed a significant shift in political dynamics. Despite the Conservative Party historically securing the majority of seats, they relinquished their longstanding control over the three former councils, leading to the formation of a new multiparty administration known as the Unity Alliance. This coalition, comprising various parties, local groups, and independent councillors, introduced a broader spectrum of voices and ideas. Through interviews with the newly elected BCP administration, we hear their perspectives on the political landscape during this tumultuous period, including the challenges and opportunities that arose during this time, and what the future of local governance looks like in a political era marked by economic crisis.
