Thinking Evolution and the 'HI'-'AI' Interaction (HIxIxAI)

Abstract:

This paper contributes to the research into 'artificial intelligence' or 'AI' by considering the evolving interaction between humans and the technology broadly termed AI including Generative AI and Agentic AI, that may assist humans in achieving greater learning outcomes, reasoning ability and understanding than would be possible in the absence of such technology. The AI story may not be all good news especially if AI could potentially be used as a tool of human exploitation, harm or neglect. A key theme is the development of AI itself as a derivative of human intelligence or 'HI' in this paper, to advanced generative forms and self-generating forms of AI that may potentially lead to more delegation and perhaps greater autonomy beyond human direction. The interaction of HI and AI is depicted by the term 'HIxIxAI' that is a new term created by the author and introduced for the first time in this paper, and distinguished from another term introduced here, 'AIxIxHI'. HIxIxAI is where HI leads and uses AI which may be the 'tool', 'servant' or 'advisor' to a human but, the final decision is always in the hands of a human. HIxIxAI is distinct from AIxIxHI. AIxIxHI is where AI may lead and therefore be more than mere 'tool', 'servant' or 'advisor' to a human whose role correspondingly diminishes to a partner or even follower role, without full control as final decision-maker. As the capacity of the AI technology increases the question as to whether humans should ever delegate any part of decisionmaking to AI will become more important. AI-Education will be a crucial aspect of HIxIxAI. There are many issues such as morality, law, privacy and security when the use of AI is concerned. The paper includes new discussion of machine learning, 'machine reasoning' and the consideration of potential 'artificial consciousness' also 'conscious AI' or 'sentient AI' as an aspect of the HIxIxAI discussion. Further research is recommended to consider how government policies may need to be refined at national and international level to maximise the potential benefits of AI for the human race without incurring unacceptable risks.
