Abstract:

The notched fatigue properties of annealed sheet samples of a rimming and a stabilized mild steel are compared. Regimes of fatigue are identified in the S/N curves. These are delineated by discontinuities, and the existence of the discontinuities is confirmed by statistical techniques, metallographical observations, and hardness surveys. The S/N curve for the stabilized steel contains only one discontinuity, which is linked to macro plastic instability. The corresponding S/N curve of the rimming steel reveals two discontinuities, the upper one being analogous to the discontinuity in the stabilized steel curve and the lower being associated with the dynamic yield point of the rimming steel.
