Abstract:

Albania and the Albanians have long been divided into several religions and denominations. This article critically investigates the self-essentialising trope or 'myth' of a commonly presumed 'superficiality of religiosity', which has typically underpinned the nationalist construction of Albanian identity. The article explores a wide range of both historical and contemporary, ethnographic insights in order to juxtapose ideological constructs and social realities at different times. Its focus includes the social and political causes, functions, purposes and effects of the established identity narratives.
