Abstract:

This article is an account of the Cædmon Project, a youth theatre initiative undertaken in Bulgaria during the summer of 2003. The project involved taking a dozen young people from the south west of England, to work with the same number of Bulgarians. After just a week of intensive devising workshops and rehearsals, the group performed in public spaces in and around the Black Sea town of Varna over a period of six days. The article charts the development of the project from inception to performance, and concludes with six observations about the nature of the theatrical process that makes it a particularly powerful tool for addressing issues of cultural diversity.
