Abstract:

This is a reflective article which I wrote shortly after I was involved in a traumatic, sudden and heart-breaking event in practice. I had just begun my second year of midwifery and was excited about working with a new mentor who I knew had a fantastic reputation both as a midwife and as a mentor. This was my first day as a second year working in the birthing unit and I was eager to see what the night shift would bring. Sadly, the night shift turned out so differently from what I had anticipated. I found writing about my feelings and emotions afterwards a therapeutic outlet. In his seminal writing on the reflective practitioner, this is what Shon (1995) refers to as ‘Reflection on Action’. This article focuses not on the clinical setting but instead on the feelings and emotions of a student, how you believe you should act in a situation and the support which we all need as we make our way through our training.
