Abstract:

Community-based research relies on the engagement of individuals and organisations from community groups. While there is extensive literature on the value to research of academic and community partnerships, there is limited analysis of the experience and impact of that research from the perspective of the community partner. This was reflected in this study where only five relevant papers were identified. This limitation creates a gap in our understanding of what works for partner organisations and the people involved, in what circumstances as well as why and how it works. Using a critical realist analysis of literature identified using PRISMA reporting guidelines, this paper seeks to uncover the mechanisms involved in the dynamics of research partnerships. The resulting analysis indicates that while the actual findings of research may or may not be useful for the partner organisation, being involved in an academic partnership and in the research process itself is beneficial and potentially transformational.
