Biography
John Powell MBE
John is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Science and Technology specialising in: Design Leadership, Human Centred Design, Drowning Prevention, Product Design, Electronic systems design, Business Management, Lifesaving Equipment Design
John is also a final year supervisor for Product Design and a masters tutor for business project unit
Research activity:
Currently leading an international design team using Human-Centred Design to investigate drowning in newly mobile infants in Bangladesh as part of an NIHR funded four year study.
Currently creating a professional framework and methodology to use design for creating interventions to reduce risk of injury
Improving design empathy.

Royal National Lifeboat Institution Role - International Lifesaving Manager...
John leads, manages and supports a number of international drowning prevention initiatives that form part of the RNLI's international strategy. He works with a range of stakeholders using project and problem tools to create human centred solutions.
Current projects and posts include:
Tanzania, Lake Victoria: Working to Improve fisher safety through human centred design with Design Without Borders, Uganda.
Tanzania, Zanzibar: Working with Pamoja, Panje and the the Arts University Bournemouth to understand the optimum design for safety critical community production resources
Global: Chair the RNLI/WHO convened 'Global buoyancy technical group'
Global: Lead the learning and development framework for the RNLI's International technical resources
Development of International drowning intervention resources (teaching and assessment, Future leaders in lifesaving, incident command) and education in low resource areas.
Past impact includes: Development of national leadership and management training for lifesaving in the UK. Member of the creation team for the UK and ROI beach risk audit process. Led the development of International drowning intervention learning and development framework (teaching and assessment, leaders in lifesaving) and education in low resource areas. Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Role:
Operational and Technical Rescue Manager (Whole time) currently based at Poole Fire Station in Dorset.
Organisational Change Manager - working across departments at all levels to facilitate human centred co-design to implement the right change in the right way.
Leading the design of leadership and management courses.
Manage an operational team of fire and technical rescue specialists to reduce risk within the community. Respond to emergency incidents within the Dorset and Wiltshire area in partnership with other agencies.
