Note. Performed at Walford Mill.

Authors: Sykes, E.L.

Dates: 5 June 2010

Abstract:

This practice based, site specific cross arts piece is an enquiry into the relationship between dancer and music within the realm of screendance. This research also experimented with ideas of dance, film and live musical performance in a gallery setting. More specifically, the research aimed to create work where the performance became a form of dynamic notation that composers could respond to.

Note is a screen dance triptych performed by dancer/choreographer Cathy Seago. The work was screened to an audience in the gallery, while the Europa String Choir (Cathy Stevens and Udo Dzierzanowski) performed a live composition in response to the film.

On screen, Cathy Seago is silhouetted in an empty art gallery. Behind her the gallery interior forms a series of horizontal lines. Conceptually, Cathy becomes a note on a page. She moves slowly, part shadow puppet, partly in response to the shapes of the gallery. Using a six string violectra, mobile phone apps and guitar, Stevens and Dzierzanowski play a soundtrack in response. In addition, Cathy and Udo also created a new piece for the Mill, which they now regularly perform in situ.

This performance formed one of the featured performances of Dorset Arts Weeks. Following each of the three performances throughout the day, the audience were encouraged to comment, debate and ask questions regarding the work. The feedback was positive and the audience keen to discuss the concept in depth. Supported by Dorset Arts Weeks and Bournemouth University.
