Abstract:

Black Down Roman fortlet was excavated by WG (Bill) Putnam and students of Weymouth College in 1970. The purpose of the excavation was to test the belief that a small rectangular enclosure at the site was potentially a Roman military signal station. An interim excavation report published in 1971 was not followed by a full report. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the evidence that survives from the Putnam excavation and to consider its implications for our understanding of the Roman conquest of Dorset during the first century AD.
