Abstract:

BBY early 1900, the Second Boer War was in the process of swinging decisively in the Imperial British Army’s favour. Boer sieges at Kimberley and Ladysmith had been lifted, their troops were in retreat and disarray, and their losses were mounting following a particularly disastrous last stand at Paardeberg on February 27. A fortnight later, Field Marshal Lord Roberts raised the Union Flag over Bloemfontein, the capital of the Orange Free State. The Boers would need decisive action in order to prevent further subjugation of their homeland
