Erme Ingot Site Conservation Statement and Management Plan

Abstract:

The Erme Ingot site consisted of a scatter of tin ingots of an uncertain date, all the ingots were recovered and no other items of material culture have been observed on the site. The ingots may date to as early as the Bronze Age but given the non-industrial process that was used to produce the ingots means that they could date as late as the 18th century.

The Erme Ingot site was found in 1992 during survey work on the Erme Estuary Site (Oldham, et al., 1993). The group located a total of 44 finds with the aid of metal detectors and plotted the position of each find before mobile sand built up over the site to stop this work. Timbers were recovered at the same time but they have be radiocarbon dated to the 6305+/- 50 BP and 6270 +/- BP (Fox, 1995, p. 21) predating tin working in the region and are thought to be from a submerged forest.

This Conservation Statement and Management Plan has been produced to enable local, regional and national stakeholder involvement in Historic England’s aspirations for the conservation management of the Erme Ingot Site to balance conservation with economic and social needs. The principle aim of this plan is to identify a shared vision of how the values and features of the Erme Estuary can be conserved, maintained and enhanced.
