Biography
John has a clear focus on developing and enhancing the student learning experience through professional practice, both in the university and externally. He is now looking to embed his research on perioperative care into educational programmes.
Educated in Medical Sciences, John then undertook his ODP training in 1998 at Royal Bournemouth Hospital. For a number of years John worked as a Lecturer Practitioner: both as a Senior ODP in clinical practice (perioperative practice) and as the Programme Leader at Bournemouth University, becoming a full-time senior lecturer in 2008.
John developed the ODP programme, which was the first allied-health professional programme to be delivered at BU, in 2002. In 2023, he also led the development of an ODP apprenticeship which received a development grant from the Office for Students to help meet the NHS England National Workforce targets for apprenticeship routes.
As a senior lecturer, John has over twenty years of experience and has undertaken numerous roles, including:...
- Faculty Practice Simulation lead - which included the development and implementation of brand new simulation facilities in BU's new Bournemouth Gateway Building and supporting skills during the CoVID pandemic.
- Leading a large pan-faculty research unit for all Health & Social care students that has used a wide range of teaching approaches to support mass learning for Interprofessional groups.
- developing and leading numerous perioperative-specific units (Levels 4-6).
- developing and leading the popular Level 6 CPD unit, Patient Care in Anaesthesia, to enable a route for multi-professional staff to work as an anaesthetic practitioner.
John's extensive external work has focused on standards for educational and professional practice. This includes:
-External examiner and external academic for education programmes at Plymouth University, Coventry University, Anglia-Ruskin University, and University of Bedfordshire.
- Board member, Association for Professional Practice, Harrogate
- Hospital Audit Consultant, Association for Professional Practice, Harrogate.
John completed his PhD in 2024. His study is titled, 'Behind closed doors - the lived experience of caring for people in the perioperative setting'. John used Giorgi's descriptive phenomenological method for his PhD. The findings have been presented nationally and internationally.
