Abstract:

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to review why business simulation games (BSGs) are used and how they can be embedded, assessed and evaluated in a first-year undergraduate teaching module. The aim of this module is to develop student skills and confidence in business and to develop employability capabilities.

Design: The paper discusses how the elements required to use a BSG were configured and reflects on the experiences of the teaching team and students in using the BSG. Practical implications: This paper offers a list of 10 recommendations to consider when implementing business simulation software in a higher education context.

Value: The paper offers a fresh empirical perspective on the use of one BSG based on two years of practical experimentation and practice.
