Biography

Mark is a Professor (Grade 2) within the Department of Design and Engineering with research theme responsibility of ‘Tribology and Design’. He has been a member of staff at Bournemouth University since 1997 and a Professor since 2001. Before this he was a Lecturer ‘B’ at Brunel University from 1993 within the Mechanical Engineering Department. He has industrial experience as a Senior Project Engineer with AE Wellworthy Ltd (FEA). Mark has also worked at the Royal Aircraft Establishment in Farnborough working on FEA optimisation programs and at Marchant Filer and Dixon Consultant Design Engineers in Romsey. Mark’s Career commenced as a sea-going marine engineer officer with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary after completing a cadetship from 1976 to 1980 which included working at Chatham naval Dockyard. He completed a BEng degree in Mechanical Engineering at Brunel University in 1988. Mark completed a Science and Engineering Research Council PhD studentship also at Brunel University from 1990 to 1993 with SKF Engineering and Research Centre (The Netherlands) as the industrial partner.

Research

Marks current research is concerned with leading four externally funded projects. 1, Failure analysis of ceramic bearing surfaces funded by SKF’s International Research Centre in The Netherlands (Postdoctoral Research Fellowship – Dr Zolotarevskiy); 2, Tribology of hydrodynamic bearings funded with Daido Metal’s EU Research Centre (Padmaoriya Natareaj) and 3, Qualitative approaches to design research methods and directions funded with Carlow Institute of Technology in Ireland (Carmel Maher). He is also the Academic Lead for a KTP funded project with the Wessex Institute of Technology concerned with innovative software capability. Mark is also hosting a visiting academic from Wuhan University of Technology funded by the Chinese Academy of Science at Bournemouth for one year (Dr Li Xing) with research into sustainable design.
