Abstract:

This chapter defines and describes musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions and the impact they have on patients. It explains the principles of using electrical stimulation (ES), especially to overcome problems of muscle atrophy, weakness and pain. It presents the evidence for effectiveness in a range of conditions, including pre- and post-operative lower limb joint replacement, shoulder surgery and osteoarthritis. The chapter also provides clinical guidance for the therapeutic use of ES with MSK patients.
