Abstract:

This chapter presents three case studies that consider strategies to better support doctoral research projects, particularly in the context of online supervision, practice-based research, and relational dynamics. Parker’s case study examines the shift to online supervision, highlighting the importance of clear communication, trust, and technological tools in maintaining strong supervisory relationships. Readman addresses the unique challenges of practice-based doctoral students in creative disciplines, emphasising the value of writing as a reflective process and the supervisor’s role in bridging creative and academic identities. Peel, Knott-Fayle, and Witcomb explore the relational aspects of supervision, advocating for empathetic, non-hierarchical approaches grounded in person-centred and feminist theories. Collectively, these case studies demonstrate the need for flexible, student-centred supervision that integrates emotional support, adaptive communication, and a recognition of diverse research identities to enable meaningful and productive doctoral experiences.
