Abstract:

This chapter explores how supervisors can enhance their own practice through structured professional development, collaborative learning, and systems-based approaches. It presents three case studies demonstrating how continuous improvement in supervision not only benefits doctoral students but also strengthens institutional research cultures. Knight and Taylor describe a Doctoral College-led initiative that significantly improved student satisfaction through structured continuous professional development programmes aligned with UK Council for Graduate Education’s Good Supervisory Practice Framework. Golding showcases a scalable, peer-led workshop model that develops reflective practice and inter-institutional collaboration. Bobeva introduces system thinking tools to support adaptive, student-centred supervision. Collectively, these case studies reinforce the importance of embedding reflective and analytical practices into supervisory development, ensuring supervisors are equipped to meet the evolving needs of diverse doctoral students.
