Abstract:

This research considers if equity investors on crowdfunding platforms displays bias against females. We argue that an increased number of females in a team is associated with a decreased level of funding success, which we test using a dataset of 397 campaigns. From this study we conclude that the aggregated gender within the language used in the investors comments has an influence upon the success of the funding obtained from equity investors. We demonstrate that physical gender of the team, gender of the primary signatory, and any gendered nuances in the language within the campaign, can influence the final decision.
