Abstract:

Institutions are investing valuable resource in the emerging technology software systems for learner analytics (LA), completely convinced of the benefits, yet recent research demonstrates how students actually learn in different digital spaces from which their activities are measured. From an educator perspective, the myriad of data dashboards available are meaningless without a clear evidence base and a shared understanding with our students about hybridity and the time, place and space within which their learning is optimised. For a meaningful dialogue in a heavily contested area, the actors represented in the student journey need, we argue, to start with key pedagogic principles that will augment and enhance excellence for our future learners. Drawing upon the work of Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), agency and practices, we offer pedagogic richness and insight into the wider debate as to the meaning and usage of metrics.
