Biography
I have been a registered midwife since 1986 mainly working at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital midwifery led unit from 1992 - 2004. Working in a midwife led unit resulted in a reappraisal of my philosophy of midwifery and consequently I have a keen interest in facilitating normal birth. Due to changes in midwifery education I realised that I would need to embark on future study; so commenced the Diploma in Professional Nursing Studies, followed by the BSC (Hons) in Midwifery Practice. Engaging in further study developed my interest in education; therefore I grasped the opportunity to act as a lecturer practitioner. In 2004 and I was offered a fulltime post as a midwife teacher. My main areas of scholarship have been the development of the pre-registration clinical practice portfolios (level C I H). In addition I am joint unit leader for the post registration Preparation for Midwifery Sign-off Mentor. I completed my MAHSCEP in 2009 which focused on how pre-registration students gained experience in gynaecology, medicine and surgery...
I enrolled on the Professional Doctorate in October 2013. The focus of my research is around medicine management in midwifery. This research and practice development is of contemporary significance for midwifery practice. Pharmaceuticals, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and therapeutics are increasingly part of a registered midwives every day practice, therefore midwives need evidence based knowledge to ensure women’s care is not compromised. The Professional Doctorate will unravel midwives perspectives on medicine management which will inform the professional development aspect of the DPP enabling the development of a system to support midwives in practice.
The thesis title: Using midwives perspectives to unravel Medicine Management in contemporary practice: A grounded theory study (TBC).
