AIoT driven smart mobility systems: a systematic literature review and inclusive strategic research framework-a case study of Indian context

Abstract:Purpose: The convergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) is revolutionising Assistive and Accessibility Technologies (A&AT), enabling transformative mobility solutions for individuals with disabilities. This study systematically reviews AIoT-driven smart mobility systems, with a particular emphasis on the Indian context, focusing on technologies supporting individuals with visual, hearing, speech, and physical impairments. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Relevant studies were identified, screened, and analysed using thematic analysis to map research trends, technological approaches, and real-world implementations. The review focused on AI algorithms integrated with IoT-enabled hardware, including smart wheelchairs, sensor-based canes, wearable devices, and adaptive navigation systems. Results: The findings reveal significant advancements in AI-powered assistive tools such as computer vision, sign language recognition, autonomous navigation, and sensor fusion for improved accessibility. Integration of AI and IoT technologies has enhanced independent mobility, social participation, and safety. However, challenges persist, including affordability, infrastructure gaps, device interoperability issues, and ethical concerns over data privacy and usage. A conceptual model is proposed that combines adaptive AIoT systems with inclusive design principles to address these barriers. Conclusion: AIoT-driven smart mobility solutions hold substantial potential to transform accessibility into a universal right, particularly for underserved populations in low-resource settings. Achieving this vision requires user-centric innovation, strong policy support, and interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure affordability, scalability, and inclusivity.
