Biography
Jo is a lecturer in the social work and social sciences department and lectures She leads units for undergraduates in qualitative research skills and postgraduates in criminological theory.
Jo spent much of her working life researching human rights in central Africa for Amnesty International, then for other non-governmental organisations and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo before returning to the UK to live in Dorset. An interest in the effects of imprisonment on society led her to spend several years managing a project supporting the reintegration of prison leavers back into their local communities. In 2015, this project partnered with an Horizon 2020 research project exploring collaboration between criminal justice agencies and Jo enjoyed a period of secondment with research partners in Norway.
In 2023 she completed her PhD thesis on Interprofessional collaborative practice in the criminal justice sector. Jo retains an interest in social justice and the human rights of detained and imprisoned people, wherever they may be, and posits that contemporary responses to crime typically create more problems than resolutions.
