Abstract:

The field of event management has seen a significant shift in recent decades, with sustainability becoming a central concern. This shift is driven by an increasing awareness of the environmental, social, and economic impacts of events and a recognition that event organisers have a responsibility to manage the many impacts events generate. While this growing awareness has led to an increased number of perspectives and publications around the topic, there is still a lack of comprehensive resources addressing key issues in event sustainability. There remains a clear need for a resource that brings together the latest perspectives on event sustainability with research and experiences from across the world. This is the gap that this Routledge Handbook of Events and Sustainability aims to fill. By including recent theoretical developments and exploring experiences of event sustainability from across the world, its contribution is to document the successes, challenges, barriers, and facilitators to developing a more sustainable events sector.
